Yes, I did miss a few days here.  I could go back and write them in but instead I’m going to stay here and remember and reflect on my month of novel writing.

This was my second NaNowriMo effort.  Last year I discovered the challenge and that it had been happening without me for years.  I loved the online idea and began exactly at midnight on November 1st. I  was going strong for the first 2 weeks, writing about my ladies: Jessie and Molly, loosely based on my relationship with my first manicurist. I was keeping up with my demanding daily word count and feeling great until I got to the NWP conference in San Antonio and then quickly, on the first official day of the conference, I realized I couldn’t continue. I am presenting three different workshops and there was just too many distraction.  I didn’t feel any guilt, just promised myself that I’d be back for another challenge and this year, even with the NWP conference scheduled for the middle of the challenge as it always is, I was ready to stay with it.

Paul Oh(NWP), also shared the NaBloPoMo, a monthly blogging challenge on our iAnthology site, and I thought, okay, let’s fold that in too.  I would write my daily word count for the National Novel Writing Month challenge and then reflect about it on my blog every day, inspired by my friend Nancy C. and I almost had them both done but it seems like my return home from Philly and Thanksgiving focused my energies on getting the novel challenge done. It’s good to know that the daily blog challenge is offered every month and I will be back for it.

NaNoWriMo ’09 was great fun! Don’t tell anyone but I didn’t really write a novel.  It was more memoir: a healthy dose of life from  my point of view.

In October, when I was getting ready for the challenge with a group of writers on our NWP iAnthology, I thought look about hard about a book topic and focused on my upcoming trip to Israel where I would be reuniting with my roommate from 30 years ago, when I lived in Israel for a year (1979-80). She remained there and lived her life not far from where we met in the south on a moshav. She married and raised 3 children in that time.  I was inspired already, before we even began to pack.

On our return I realized that I had a great vehicle for a 50,000 word book, my life in Israel, during that first year at 30 and then many years later (16) when I met Tuvia and started traveling there once or twice every year with him.  To separate myself from the story I gave us fictional names- Lucy and Asher and wrote the first haft from Lucy’s point of view and then the second half from Asher’s.

I have never taken on the breath of a book before.  I  write every day.  I begin with an online journal and then move to one of my blogs, usually putting text to a photo  I upload each day.  I was concerned that I would run dry but for most of the writing that didn’t happen.  Just the last day when I was racing to finish.  Just a mere 2000 words to go.

I let the moment direct me.  I created scenes identified with a date and a place.  Yes, Israel was a major player in the piece but it was really about my rich relationship with Tuvia over our 14 years together. I moved from one moment to another and let the moment drive the scenes. As I finished one I was led to another totally out of sequence.  I am sure that some of the scenes were repeated with different words. I have written some of the moments before this writing but I never looked back.

I loved the theory behind this challenge.  We often are so caught up in revising that we never get to the finish and this way, plowing ahead each day, focused on keeping up the daily word count, moving the site’s blue line that measures the submitted word count, you have a good reason to keep going and not revising. There’s no time.

We also created a Group of the iAnthology to support the writers in this challenge and that kept me going.  Margaret Hartford and I are both retired from full-time teaching and even though our lives are busy, we were both writing into the day in the morning.  I often wrote for 3-4 hours at a time, allowing myself breaks along the way and returning often to the smoothness of a new MacBook Pro keyboard to keep going. I can’t imagine finishing if I were teaching and or raising children.

What was magical about the experience was sharing some of it with Tuvia, the other main character.  I had been sharing my progress with him but orally.  Then one day as I was working on a scene in Israel that caught me, the first time I met his sister, we talked about it and he was dying to read it so, I actually looked back and read a bit of it to myself first and then out loud to him.  He was impressed with its coherence and authenticity.  I enjoyed reading it to him.

After that experience as I moved into writing the story from his point of view I wanted to share more with him and even though he couldn’t say that was what was really going through his thoughts, it felt that it was authentic, that it could have been his thoughs. In the early days of our relationship, he read some of my early short stories and suggested that I write about his Holocaust experiences.  I refused him, feeling that I couldn’t do justice to this period or his personal experiences, walking home from a concentration camp in the middle of Russia. But our life together was a time I felt I could capture and that challenge, writing from his point of view was a wonderful and stimulating challenge.  Often, as I finished a section the scene lingered with me and Tuvia and I talked at length about our shared memories and more and more details made their way into the story.

I wrote every day, even during the NWP conference.  I wonder, now that I’m finished and won the challenge, will I miss the writing?  Of course I can keep going now  and I can return to the draft and start revising.

And then hopefully, there will be NaNoWriMo 2010.  Will I be back for more?

NaNoWriMo Day 16: 30,305 Words So Far!

Posted by Bonnie on 16th November 2009

nano_09_blk_participant_100x100_1.pngnablo1109.120x90

30,000 words!  I’m ahead! How did I do that?  Was it too easy?

I don’t know what I have here?  I keep writing the story of my life with Tuvia/Asher.  I’m in it now from his point of view and I am moving comfortably from one event to another.  Is it too easy?

I am racing, staying with it now because I’m worried and wondering what will happen when I travel tomorrow to Philly and begin a very fast paced NWP conference schedule, meeting our HVWP team and then NWP techies and others.

I will be able to craft my own schedule but there will be unknown distractions and great challenges to my writing energy and focus.  I’m bringing my guitar along as well and how much time will I spend playing it?

I am hoping for the best and glad that I’ve been pushing to stay ahead.  I have a feeling I will finish before November 30.  I have no serious responsiblities for Thanksgiving.

I will be a NaNoWriMo winner.  You can be sure of that.  And then I will have the best reward.  50,000 words to shape and craft!

NaNoWriMo: Day 15! 27,345 and counting!

Posted by Bonnie on 15th November 2009

nano_09_red_participant_100x100_1nablo1109.120x90

Sunday!  Sunshine, warmth outside in Nyack.  Comfortable all day.  And lots of writing.  Writing to 27,000 and beyond.  I have moved to explore Tuvia/Asher’s point of view.  I was worried about the move, but so far, it’s more fun than Bonnie/Lucy.  I know Tuvia and I know what I can add to create details I don’t have.  I’ve been reading parts to him and he is very excited and proud of me.  Love that!

I just finished our first formal date from his voice. I had already written it from my voice but I’m really enjoying this new challenge.  It feels more like writing fiction.

Our first date.  It’s a long story and I haven’t moved on yet.

Dinner and other writing and Obama’s documentary and exercise to come but this computer is easy to return to.  So far, I’m not running dry. So far, so good.

27,000+ Who knew?  I’m over the half-way mark.

YES WE CAN!

NaNoWriMo Friday13th: A Glorious Day for Writing: 23,132

Posted by Bonnie on 13th November 2009

nano_09_red_participant_100x100_1nablo1109.120x90

Last night I was feeling like I could be going dry soon but no, great day today for writing comfortably first at home in the early morning and then here at Tuvia’s kitchen table.  Today ironically was probably the easiest writing day and the most productive.  I was writing with a comfortable flow and reading some more of it to Tuvia. He enjoys it, me too.

I have no idea what I will do with it but a lot of my like will be on these pages. Lots of text to inspire digital work and that’s where I always want to go.

So I am more than a day ahead.  Now my goal is 25,000 words.  That sounds great! Half way to the end.  Exciting and as I get to the middle I’m going to shift focus to my Asher/Tuvia character reliving the moments I’ve written from Lucy/Bonnie’s pov.  Can’t wait for the new challenge.

I am loving this process. Good that I have comfortable time spots.

Okay, time for a break. More tonight after dinner out, after guitar practice.

I’m off.

And late breaking news: Back from dinner and guitar and Rachel Maddow is on and I’m writing like crazy-

I just hit 24,054 and that’s it for tonight.  25,000 tomorrow and more.

Wait there’s more. I couldn’t sleep. I tired but no so I left my bed and found my way to the dark living room but with the lovely white light of the screen and my glasses, of course I found my way back inside and suddenly I had

25,054 words!  YES, YES and YES once again.

NaNoWriMo Day 12: Over 20,000!

Posted by Bonnie on 12th November 2009

nano_09_blk_participant_100x100_1.pngnablo1109.120x90

Today was an easy writing day.  I was up writing early with a few software issues with my Word software as I wondered what I would use to write my book with but I have more options than I realize immedaitely. I find that I need a cool head to deal with glitches.

I left it for a few hours for meetings outside- lunch with my drama buddy, Steve and then some grocery shopping to create some of Tuvia’s favorite dishes for dinner. Pleasant distractions.

And then back home in dreary, windy, rainy weather. Cooking, email and more writing and I was beyond 20,000!  Jerusalem seems to be holding me and when tuvia(Asher) arrived he wanted to hear some of the piece.  I was hesitant.  I hadn’t read much of it, and I hesitated until I just started to read and he was amazed that it was so clear and coherent but then I’m very comfortable writing here so I wasn’t suprised.

So far, I haven’t had a problem finding things to include in my book, but I am sure I will go dry.  I wonder how it will be to write from Asher’s pov.  A challenge I’m looking forward to.

It’s a truly wonderful challenge.

I am not expecting to write too much or this evening. I’m over my word count for the day and I have a guitar class with my new Flameco group.  But there’s tomorrow morning- a nice chunk of time for me to build up my count.  I want to kick it up before the Philly conference begins on Tuesday night.

Okay, that’s all for now.

NaNoWriMo Day 10 and a Tuesday Slice!

Posted by Bonnie on 10th November 2009

nano_09_blk_participant_100x100_1.pngnablo1109.120x90slice-of-life-challenge

I am writing a book!  50,000 words by the end of this month.  Every day I’m writing, I’m thinking, I’m asking questions.  I tried to make this fiction but honestly,I am writing something closer to a memoir inspired by my last trip to Israel and a journey to visit my roommate from 30 years ago when I lived in Israel for a year.  I left and Susan stayed and her life there led me to make Israel the place for this book.

Back!

Tuvia has been helping and my personal historian.

Instead of chapters, I’m organing it around a place and date.  To make it a bit freer,  Tuvia and I have new names.

And I am not working on any big projects at the moment.  I am attending the National Writing Project next week, but I have no workshops this year to dilute my writing energy.

So far I am keeping up with the daily word count of 1667 words per day and sometimes I am ahead.

I have been writing a bit, moving to other things, coming back again, moving away, coming back and that’s been great.  Although I have not read anything yet. No revising until December when I reach 50,000.

It’s fun, just the process.  It’s like how I felt about directing a high school play.  For me the process was much more exciting and valuable than the performance.

I know that Tuvia would love for me to share some of my writing, but not yet.  It’s too raw.

And if I didn’t have enough challenges, I am also participating in the National Blog Writing Month for November.

I have been reflecting each day here.  At first I had my book on a blog but I realized that I could be ready to write and not be able to get on the web, so Ive moved to a Word document.

So far, it s a pleasure getting to know Lucy and Asher.

NaNoWriMo Day 9: Over 15,000

Posted by Bonnie on 9th November 2009

nano_09_blk_participant_100x100_1.pngnablo1109.120x90

Great flow today.  Sunny and warm outside, creative inside.

Writing itno the the day with an early start in the darkness- 5:30. Ready for news in the background.  Tuvia was up early, getting ready for work, hoping I’d be asleep. No chance. It’s my favorite time of the day.

Writing until 9. Of course it’s writing and checking email, and reading blog posts and moving around the apartment for coffee and preparation for guitar. I was comfortably moving along to 15,000 and without even realizing it, I was over as I worked on a section that focused me as I described my first trip to Israel after a 16-year gap.  Seeing Israel through Tuvia’s eyes took over me: walking on the Tel Aviv beach, traveling to Haifa, meeting his sister Dorri. Exciitng to return to these moments.

Finally I had to stop and move to the rest of the day: guitar lesson, some reading, exercise, getting ready for Dana.

15,374!

Dinner out and back now for the evening with a fresh wind and time for writing.

A perfect day!

I’m off…

NaNoWriMo Day 4: What happened?

Posted by Bonnie on 5th November 2009

nano_09_red_participant_100x100_1nablo1109.120x90

What happened yesterday?  I’m up over 7000 words, still ahead (6668). I am very motivated to keep adding my wordcount as it grows, to my totals at the NaNoWriMo site and I enjoy the friendly competition with our iAnthology buddy team.  I’m sure that those with the smaller wordcount are not so thrilled.

I do find that I’m getting more tired by night time.  I missed the middle of the Yankee game last night and even with my focus on my writing, I do get to the other things in life.  I sat at the Apple Store yesterday moving more of my things from my old MacBook to my new MacBook Pro.  It wasn’t smooth, but it did get done.  Great to have the tech support all around me.

As for the writing, now that’s fun.  Honestly, I’m writing a memoir.  I tried to move it to fiction but it’s just not fiction.  My minor characters are holding on to their real names.  I couldn’t rename Hilda!  But my main characters have names of their own and that’s working for me.  I am able to move away from them a bit, give them some breathing room.  Sure Lucy is me and Asher, Tuvia, but I feel freer to give them some creative license.

Today, I need to get to guitar.  Flamenco class tonight.  I think that writing a novel is not a good excuse. But I have writing blocks, like right now at 6 AM. still my favorite writing time.

I am enjoying the structure- moving back and forth in time and moving into Asher’s voice.

I love the process! I get to a place that I remember well and I just burrow in and because my main characters have their own names, I’m very comfortable to be creative.

Okay, okay…I’m moving on.

NaNoWriMo: Day 3

Posted by Bonnie on 4th November 2009

nano_09_red_participant_100x100_1 nablo1109.120x90

Day 3 for National Novel Writing Month.

I’m ahead today.  I needed 5001 and I have 6, 225! I’m comfortable.

I remember this first week last year.  I was comfortable and moving along without too many obstacles.  I had commitments but not a full time job.  I didn’t have to wait till the end of day to write when I was feeling exhausted.

Funny, I was writing on and off yesterday and when I got to the end of the day, I couldn’t finish this post.  But my writing time is best now,  early in the morning as the day begins and like the morning I’m on a fresh page.

I’m writing my novel, but  it’s not really fiction.  My main characters have their own names but they are totally fueled by my life, by Tuvia’s life.  So far I have been writing as Lucy but I think it might be interesting, challenging to try and write in Tuvia’s/Asher’s skin as well.  I loved a novel by Carol Shields who wrote a novel from the woman’s point of view and then you began the same novel on the other side and it was told from the husband’s point of view.  That might be a wonderful challenge.

Anyway, I’m am enjoying a lead on word count.

I don’t know what I have here but I have a good flow, especially when I hit on moments that are really vivid in my memory banks.  It’s harder to write about 30 years ago, than 10 or 5 or yesterday of course.

It’s wonderful to be challenged!
